God’s Peace and Tony Stark

“Peace is having a bigger stick than the other guy.”

– Tony Stark, a.k.a “Iron Man”

This is one of my favorite movie quotes. But I’ve only ever thought of this in a national security kind of way. It always reminds be of President Reagan’s “Peace through strength” concept.

But the other day it struck me that this statement has spiritual truth in it too.

Jesus himself said very much the same thing as Tony Stark. Multiple times in fact:

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” – John 1:5

“Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” – 1 John 4:4

“For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” – 1 John 5:4-5

Do you see? We have the guy with the bigger stick on our side, for God is so much more powerful than the enemy. The light is stronger than the darkness. When we rest in the shadow of His wings, we are safe. We can be at peace.

“They will fight against you but will not overcome you, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord. – Jeremiah 1:19

So take it from Iron Man. When you have the bigger stick, everything is gonna be okay, ’cause you’re going to win.

“They will make war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will overcome them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings—and with him will be his called, chosen and faithful followers.” – Revelation 17:14

{My little bro turned five the other day and my parents gave him this costume. I’m pretty much dying from the cuteness.}
